Crazy designs on golf course

In partnership with Rother council and the Children's Fund, Bexhill Town Centre and Tourism Action Group invited Bexhill's young people to put forward their own ideas for a new Crazy Golf course for the seafront.

Gill Hamilton, activities coordinator for the Children's Fund said: "The first phase of this project was based at the De La Warr Pavilion from Monday to Wednesday.

"The aim of the first two days was to work with a group of 24 primary and secondary pupils from schools in the town's Central Ward and evaluate other local Crazy Golf sites in the Hastings and Eastbourne area.

"By Wednesday, pupils were working directly with local sculptor Will Nash, who was introduced to Bexhill by arts development officer Martin Ryan. Will is providing the expertise to guide the pupils and help them develop their own ideas for a new course in Bexhill.

"Each team of six pupils was led by an experienced young tutor from Bexhill High School. Nila, Claire, Kimberley and Joanne, who will be joining Bexhill College this September, have previously work with landscape architect Tim Gale who has been commissioned to work on the new designs for Bexhill's seafront.

"Having completed their own design for the Crazy Golf site last year, they are now prepared to develop this initiative further by leading workshops for the younger pupils.

"Parents were invited to take an active part in the project and Tuesday was planned as a dedicated family learning day, supported by Wendy Morton, from Hastings College's Adult Learning Centre.

"The pupils themselves first informed their parents of the aims and current progress of the project before taking them on to Fort Fun in Eastbourne to evaluate further a themed example of another Crazy Golf course.

"Wednesday was Construction Day. Guests were cordially invited to the De La Warr Pavilion to take part in the presentation of a selection of Crazy designs.
