A man has been banned from driving for two years and given a suspended jail sentence after he was caught racing a vehicle along a road in Lynchmere.
Sam Leech, 30 of Petworth Road, Haslemere was found guilty of dangerous driving at Chichester Crown Court on Thursday, January 17.
He overtook a vehicle on the B2131 in Lynchmere in April 2011, and collided with an oncoming car driven by a 17-year-old girl.
Both were taken to hospital with minor injuries, and Leech was arrested soon after.
PC Steve Butcher, of the Sussex Police road policing unit, said: “This was very nearly a fatal crash, where the defendant made the decision to race another car despite the obvious dangers to himself and other road users. The Roads Policing Unit and partnership agencies work hard to educate drivers and prevent crashes, but as this sentence shows, where motorists drive dangerously and put others at risk they can expect to be dealt with robustly.”
Leech was ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work and pay £500 toward prosecution costs.
