An X-ray of the herring gull.

Voluntary rescuer Becky Brooke, of West Sussex Wildlife Protection, was called out to a suspicious dead herring gull in the area of Elizabeth court. The gull was taken to Fitzalan House Veterinary group in Littlehampton, where an x-ray scan revealed a gun pellet in its neck.

Jaine Wild, secretary of the organisation said: “We are really angry about this, as the same thing happened last year in the same area. Someone is shooting at these birds from their window.”

“Herring gulls are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside act 1981, and I know some people get fed up with them, but gulls come part and parcel with the seaside. So if you live by it then so do they.”

She asked anyone who saw a suspicious person with a firearm in that area to contact the police or West Sussex Wildlife Protection on 01243 825804.
