Midhurst garden centre is burgled for £1 safe

A garden centre has become the victim of a fourth burglary in the last year, after the theft of a safe earlier this week.

Luckily the safe only contained £1 worth of pennies and some marker pens, but owner of Aylings Garden Centre Chris Adam doesn’t understand the sudden spate of burglaries.

It was a few weeks ago that two men were sentenced to a community order after being caught at the garden centre brandishing chain saws.

The June theft saw the pair enter the building which set off the alarm system, and police were quickly on the scene to arrest the would-be thieves.

They were each sentenced to a 12 month community order and curfew at Chichester Magistrates Court on September 26.

The latest theft has frustrated the owner, who has run the garden centre for over 13 years, but he said they have the right security in place, as the alarm systems are reliable and ensure the police are quickly on the scene.

“The thieves on Monday got away very quickly, but we have images on CCTV.

“We don’t leave anything lying around as we are aware that these sort of things go on.”

The theft occurred at around 12.30am in the early hours of Monday morning at Aylings Garden Centre near Rogate.

Anyone who saw the incident or has any information should call Sussex Police on 101.
