Police target drivers at Beachy Head

The force said it carried out checks in the area over the weekend in a bid to deter groups of drivers in modified cars racing each other along the roads at the famous landmark.

The crackdown follows complaints from residents, walkers, cyclists, nature lovers and visitors about motorists driving at excessive and reckless speeds

They say the modifications to the vehicles make the cars even noisier and the sound can be heard for miles around.

The Beachy Head Road location is widely shared on forums dedicated to car modifications and attracts people from across the country.

Eastbourne Police said this week, “We are aware there is an on-going issue with vehicle anti-social behaviour at Beachy Head and the surrounding area. At the weekend we have been targeting the area to deter these actions, and address concerns.”

Police are urging people to report incidents to Operation Crackdown, an online initiative run by Sussex Safer Roads Partnership and Sussex Police, which gives the communities of Sussex an opportunity to report specific instances of anti-social driving, as well as abandoned vehicles on the road.
