Mrs Bourne said: "We’re very fortunate to have a large group of volunteers who work within Sussex Police, in my office and alongside the force. Their roles range from Special Constables who help to keep our streets safe, to search and rescue specialists who assist with finding missing people and to Independent Custody Visitors who ensure standards and welfare for those held in police custody - to name just a few.

"During this pandemic more than ever they deserve our thanks, as many of them have unselfishly increased their volunteering hours, putting themselves at increased risk. This is testament to their strength of character and their commitment to making a positive contribution to their communities.

"Thank you to all of those who dedicate your time and skills for free. Your contribution does not go unrecognised and is greatly appreciated."
