A woman died after she fell from a bridge over the M23 and was hit by a vehicle.

Sussex Police was called to Junction 10a (Maidenbower) at around 8.35pm on Thursday (September 3).

A spokesman said: “A person believed to be a woman had fallen off the bridge above the southbound carriageway and was subsequently struck by a vehicle travelling south.

“The casualty was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The motorway has been closed to traffic between Junctions 9 (Gatwick) and 11 (Pease Pottage) while an investigation is launched into the circumstances.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area for the time being.”

No estimation was given of when the motorway would reopen.
