A DAMIEN Hirst artwork fetched more than £4,000 at Fernhurst auctioneer John Nicholson’s.

With more than 1,000 lots, four Christmas sales offered a range artefacts, from traditional English furniture to avant-garde art, Oriental antiquities and jewellery. A sale of silver and jewellery at the Objects sale put the sparkle into Christmas for some lucky bidders.

A diamond brooch estimated at £200-£300 sold for £1,000 while a rare continental silver tumbler cup with Islamic script sold for £1,300, far above an estimate of £100-£200.

The Fine Paintings sale saw a bidding war erupt over a Damien Hirst artwork. ‘Spin’ outstripped its estimate and was sold for £4,400. A painting of a Manchester city scene attributed to the artist Valette also sparked huge international interest, with the hammer finally closing at £6,000.

John Nicholson’s is seeking entries for its next Fine Paintings sale on February 25. For details visit www.johnnicholsons.com
