Dangerous emissions gone with the wind?

THE WINDS of change are sweeping through a Worthing retail park leading the fight to cut greenhouse gases.

The Downland's Retail Park, at Lyon's Farm, Broadwater, is set to become one of the first in the country to use wind power if plans for state-of-the-art wind turbines get the go-ahead.

The eco-friendly turbines '” part of plans to redevelop the area next to the Halford's store '” could save 11 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year by providing more than 10 per cent of the new development's energy.

They will hidden away from the public, placed behind shops, and also be effectively silent '“ each of the seven turbines makes "as much noise as someone whispering."

Matt Harmer, spokesman for Colliers CRE, the company which owns the site, said: "In a few years these turbines will be a common sight '” but we are pleased that Worthing is at the forefront of helping to reduce CO2 emissions"

The proposals go before council planners later this year.
