Dave, who has an inherited genetic eye disease began volunteering in the Art Department for local charity ARRCC four years ago.

As his confidence grew, Dave then became employed as Transport Co-ordinator for the charity, which provides respite and activities for adults with disabilities in the Rye and Rother area.

To raise much needed funds, the suggestion was made to turn a disused building on the Rye Creative Centre site into a pre loved Furniture Warehouse. Dave enthusiastically offered to help, and is now running the project.

Dave joined the Blind Veterans UK in 2013 and is now training with his ‘Pilot’ Paul for this latest charity challenge, fully supported by his Colleagues and the Members of ARRCC.

He said: “We have been out training a few times and it has been very wet and cold.

“Communication is the important thing as Paul has to tell me when to change gear.”

Fund raising is nothing new to Dave - he ran the Brighton Marathon at the weekend in aid of Blind Veterans UK.

He said: “I have done more since I have had this sight condition than I did before.

“I have always been very independent. No-one wants to be visually impaired , but when you accept it then you just have to get on with things.

“You have to show people that this is not the end of the story and that you can do it.”

Irna Mortlock from ARRCC said: “The Warehouse has gone from strength to strength under Dave and is gaining popularity for the ‘best deals’ in pre loved furniture.”
