A spokesman for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said a crew from Billingshurst was called to a bonfire in a field off Parbrook in Billingshurst at 10.29pm last night.

He added: “Joint Fire Control mobilised one crew from Billingshurst Fire Station to the scene, where they brought the fire under control using a flexi backpack extinguisher and buckets of water.

The fire was started deliberately and caused around five square metres of damage, the spokesman said.

He added: “With warmer weather forecast in the coming weeks, we would like to remind all residents of the dangers of starting a fire in the open.

“What may start as a small campfire or bonfire can very quickly get out of control after periods of dry weather, which allows fire to spread incredibly quickly.

“This can be disastrous, not only damaging our countryside and properties, but putting people’s lives at risk. Nobody wants to have to deal with the consequences of this.

“We would ask those responsible to think twice about their actions and the impact on others.”
