Demolition follows school blaze

FIRE brigade and police investigations have been continuing this week into the cause of the biggest fire in the town in years.

Fifty firefighters struggled through the early hours of last Friday morning to bring the blaze under control.

Fire swept through the vacant Charters Ancaster School buildings in Penland Road shortly after midnight.

Fire crews racing from Battle and Hastings to assist colleagues from Bexhill and Hailsham could see the flames half a mile away as they approached Glyne Gap.

The flames were whipped by a bitterly cold north wind. Crews from Battle and The Ridge had begun their journey in snowstorms.

Eight fire appliances, an aerial ladder platform, a hydraulic platform and an 18,000-litre water tanker brought from Burgess Hill were involved.

The building will be demolished.
