But the team from Midhurst-based cookware company Dexam International proved anything is possible as they successfully battled the Brecon Beacons in dire weather.

Tom Roberts from Portsmouth, Becky Anderson from Worthing, Penny Coventry from Taunton and Ed Caughey from Weybridge made up the Dexam Dudes and have so far raised £1,600 for children’s charity Action Medical Research.

Managing director Bryony Dyer said: “Everyone in the company is proud and delighted with what the team achieved. Driven by the wonderful cause and by their own determination, they showed that just about anything is possible in the right frame of mind.”

Organised by Action for Charity, Race the Sun is a challenge for teams of four, starting at sunrise and finishing by sunset. They have to cycle 45 miles, climb 2,907ft up Pen y Fan and canoe 3km across Pontsticill Reservoir.

Tom said they travelled to Wales on Friday evening for registration and event briefing, then had to be at the start by 5.45am. It was as they set off on the first 39km cycle that it dawned on them just how tough the challenge would be.

“The majority of the route was uphill,” he explained.

“Three hours later, we arrived at the bottom of Pen Y Fan, all pretty exhausted already. As we looked nearly 3000ft up to the summit, I have to admit there were a few doubts between us and some words of encouragement were needed.

“As the rain lashed down, we managed to climb up on to the mountain ridge and proceeded to hike around the Horseshoe Three Peaks Route.

“Finally, we had to get back on the bikes for a third time and ride 30km to the finish.

“We completed the event in 10hrs 45mins, which we never would have done without grit, determination and teamwork.”

Action Medical Research is dedicated to improving the health of babies and children.

It is offering hope to the many thousands of families who are dealing with the trauma of a baby born too early, striving to support a child affected by disability, or facing the challenge of caring for a child with a rare and devastating disease for which there is no cure.
