IT was a dream come true for 89-year-old Mike Hailey when he found himself flying up, up and away in a hot air balloon.

Mike, a former Midhurst resident who now lives at the Rotherlea Care Home in Petworth, found himself floating up into the air from the British School of Ballooning in Ebernoe after his wish was pulled out of the hat in the monthly ‘Pick a Wish’ scheme run by activity co-ordinators at the home.

The innovative scheme has seen elderly residents taking a husky sled ride, enjoying the biggest chocolate eclair ever made and spending a day at the seaside.

But Monday evening’s wish was the first time a resident had taken to a hot air balloon.

Mike, whose son Andrew joined him for the adventure, said: “This is such a great opportunity, it’s something I have always wanted to do”
