FORMER Ditcham Park School pupils Richard Culwick, 16, and Hollie Lewis, 17, returned to school to share the excitement of their Duke of Edinburgh expedition to the Himalayas with those who had helped to raise funds for the pair to undertake their adventure.
They spent five weeks mountaineering and carrying out scientific research after joining an expedition to Ladakh organised by the British School’s Exploring Society (BSES).
The team spent 25 days hiking into the mountains and camping each night. They summitted several peaks, including a 6,000m un-named and unclimbed peak, which they officially named ‘Mount Dorgea’ after their sherpa, and endured snow storms which descended on them for five days.
The research included human physiology, studies of freshwater invertebrates in a high altitude lake, glaciology, soil studies and botany. These reports will be published in full on the BSES website www.bses.org.uk in due course.
