A Midhurst mother has told of her horror after discovering her four-year-old daughter on the pavement of a busy main road after she had left her in a classroom with two teachers on her first-ever day at school.
Four-year-old Diana Kapelus had crawled, unnoticed by teachers, under a gate and out of the playground at Midhurst Primary School.
She then found her way back down the unmade-up road, Heathfield Gardens, to the main A286 Bepton Road.
Instead of going straight home after leaving Diana at school, her mother had gone shopping at Budgens supermarket with her partner, six-month-old baby girl and three-year-old son.
An hour later as she walked back down Bepton Road towards her home on Holmbush, she discovered Diana distressed, standing on the pavement.
“At first I didn’t recognise her in the distance and then I saw it was her. She saw me and ran towards me. She was very upset and distressed,” said Diana’s mother.
“I thank God I went shopping, I cannot bear to think what could have happened. Diana could have been killed or hurt by a car or taken by a stranger.”
