A headteacher has been praised for the way he has transformed a once struggling school.
Petworth Primary, in South Grove, underwent a two-day inspection in May, having been rated ‘requires improvement’ in 2015.
While that overall rating remained, inspector Bruce Waelend recognised the concerted efforts made by headteacher John Galvin to bring things up to scratch.
There was particular praise for the early years provision, which was rated ‘good’.
In his report, Mr Waelend said: “The headteacher joined the school when it was at a low ebb. Standards were poor, teaching was weak and behaviour was far from good. Morale of staff was low and there was little capacity in leadership.
“He has wasted no time in raising morale, improving behaviour, engaging the support of parents, and striving to eradicate weak teaching. He has united the school in a concerted drive for improvement. As a result, the school is now improving and there is stronger leadership capacity.”
Mr Galvin described the latest Ofsted report as “a marked improvement” and added: “As a school we are moving in the right direction, but we need to ensure our outcomes improve, which they will.”
He added: “Our school is interested in developing individuals academically, socially and spiritually. We are extremely confident that our outcomes for pupils will be vastly improved this year throughout the school.
“With higher outcomes there must be better teaching, higher expectations and robust systems in place, which should meet the recommendations put forward by Ofsted.
“Unfortunately we live in a world where it is all about outcomes and outcomes in education is reading, writing and maths. School is far more than just outcomes for children as every parent knows.”
Mr Galvin said he and his team were “very appreciative” of the help given by inspectors and added: “We will continue to work with the local education authority and diocese, who have recognised that the teaching and learning in our school is good.”
