Clampdown on Steyning dog fouling for fortnight

The campaign, organised by Steyning Parish Council, started on Saturday September 27 will see volunteers mark any dog fouling with biodegradable marker spray with the aim of highlighting the extent of the problem and shaming repeat offenders into changing their behaviour.

Slough Borough Council enacted similar measures in 2012 after complaints from residents about a number of its open spaces and found they significantly reduced the amount of dog fouling in the area, and Steyning is hoping its scheme will deliver similar results for the parish.

A spokesperson for Steyning Parish Council said: “Dog faeces can cause blindness in children and other health problems.

“Dog owners can be fined up to £1,000 for failing to clear up after their pets.

“Slough Borough Council found that spray painting dog mess resulted in a 72 per cent reduction in fouling in their parks, so we are hoping for similar success.

“In addition the number of fouls marked will be counted and monitored so we can understand where the worst problems are across the town and consider additional measures such as signage.

“Residents are encouraged to report any owner who does not clear up after their dog to the neighbourhood wardens on 07734 387889 or 07734 387888.”
