Excellent results for Chichester area’s beaches

WATER quality at the Chichester district’s three EU-designated beaches is still among the best in England and Europe.

It has once again been classified as excellent, with West Wittering, Bracklesham Bay and Selsey’s East Beach receiving another Solent water quality award, acknowledging the standard in 2011.

District councillor John Connor, who has responsibility for the environment said: “We have been working hard with the Environment Agency and Southern Water to make sure our beaches are safe, as well as fun.

“During the bathing season (May to September) all EU-designated beaches are sampled on a weekly basis to check the quality of the water.

“We are proud that our water quality is once again ranked as excellent.

“With many people choosing to stay at home for their annual holiday, the fact that our beaches have great water quality can only be a good thing for tourism in the district.”

The results of the sampling programme can be found on the council’s website at www.chichester.gov.uk/waterquality.

Members of the public will also be able to read the results via posters which will be displayed at locations around the district.
