Exclusive: New blueprint revealed for The Terraces

Overlooking Brighton seafront - from a plunge pool, or perhaps sipping a drink on an exclusive roof terrace. That's the future in store for members of Soho House, the world-famous private members' club, under plans submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council.

Brighton and Hove Independent can reveal Soho House, with membership fees of up to £1,400 a year, has commissioned Michaelis Boyd Associates, a leading firm of architects, to transform The Terraces near the Sea Life Centre, in Madeira Drive, into a 'high-quality destination'.

It will include restaurants for the public on the lower tier, as well as a private members' club, featuring a gym, bar, and roof terrace, along with a plunge pool, bar, and sundeck.

The plans - formally published today in the Brighton and Hove Independent- promise that developers will improve the 'characteristically-drab and uninteresting design' of the current buildings, to attract more visitors.

Developers want to overhaul the site, demolishing parts of the building to create a new attraction to the long-neglected section of the seafront. The Terraces Grill and Bar closed in December last year.

A planning document seen by Brighton and Hove Independent states: 'In order for the buildings to be suitable as a high-class venue, significant alteration and demolition is needed.'

The Soho House Group '“ founded by Nick Jones, husband of Kirsty Young, the broadcaster - hopes to bring in new restaurants, with Pizza East, Chicken Shop, and Dirty Burger have all been earmarked for the development. There are also plans for a fish-and-chip restaurant, and a retail unit with a café.

The application, submitted in the name of Brighton Seafront Regeneration Ltd, is scheduled for a council decision in November.

A similar application in August last year was withdrawn following complaints from residents, who said the view of the sea from Marine Parade would be obscured.
