Fairtrade fashion at Bexhill College

The event is a collaboration between the College and Bexhill Fairtrade Town Committee.

Ethical sourcing of materials is part of the A-Level curriculum in Textiles, and pupils are designing and developing their own garments to be displayed.

Jack Doherty, chairman of the Bexhill Fairtrade Committee, said: "There is a lot of interest in Fairtrade and ethical values in the students. This promises to be an exhilarating evening."

A number of outlets for fairtrade clothing will also be represented at the event, which begins at 7.30pm.

The results of Bexhill's Bananathon are also in.

Part of the Fairtrade Fortnight, the Bananathon saw schools, businesses and communities around Bexhill eating Fairtrade bananas as part of a nationwide record attempt at banana-eating.

1,894 were eaten in Bexhill over the 24 hours, with John Fowler winning a bottle of wine for coming closest with his estimate of 1,555.

A record of 470,001 was set nationally.

Adults are 5, students 4, to include a glass of wine or soft drink.

Jack said: "It's a sign that Fairtrade is really integrating with the spirit of Bexhill as a Fairtrade Town and that more people are connecting with further ranges of fairtrade products into the fashion range."
