Families enjoy Medieval day out at annual Loxwood Joust

With something for young and old alike, families were transported back in time as the Loxwood Meadow came alive as a medieval battle camp.

They were entertained by a full programme of activities including medieval weapon demonstrations, cannon fire, archery battles, full contact jousting, falconry displays and cooking demonstrations, along with a living history village and medieval craft traders. Traders and hawkers vied for attention in the Mediaeval Market Place, ensuring the 15th Century was really brought to life; clearly depicting a time where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate.

With four Jousting Knights battling it out for supremacy, Sir Hector of Horsham did not always ride within the rules of chivalry or with honourable sporting behaviour, before Sir Thomas of Loxwood won the title. The very talented horsemanship and amusing banter had the captivated crowds, who were often on the edge of their seats, cheering, laughing, booing and hissing as the Knights commandeered the jousting arena.

Sharon Bardin, a first time visitor said: “We had a fantastic day out, we really didn’t know what to expect as we had not been before and we were really surprised at how well it was all organised.

“The joust in particular was really good fun and my daughter was especially taken with the witches.

“There were so many stalls to look at and there was a lot of choice with all the food outlets. We will definitely be coming along next year.”

The Witches, making their debut appearance in Witch Wood, were a huge hit with their cauldron, potions and horrible tales. The Mediaeval Babes, Avon Faire and The Sultan’s Sirens, also located in the Enchanted Woodland, held their audiences spellbound with song and dance.

In a first for the festival, the fun continues this weekend. Maurice Bacon, the event’s organiser said: “It really makes our day when we see our visitors so enthralled by all they learn and what they can see. This is the first year we have run the event for two consecutive weekends and we are looking forward to another unique living history weekend of mediaeval mayhem on August 8 and 9.”
