The £28m stretch of single carriageway will open to the public from about 12.20pm.

This follows the official speeches and ribbon cutting from midday. The 3km road joins the A259 at Flansham with the A29 at Shripney.

Felpham’s county councillor Graham Jones told the parish council on Tuesday: “I am sure the opening of this road will be welcomed and, hopefully, if the road does its job it will relieve much of the congestion in Felpham, allowing through traffic to continue relatively unhindered.”

Cllr Paul English, a Felpham parish councillor, urged Cllr Jones to work with county highways officers to ease the congestion he expected at the relief road’s western end in Shripney.

“The officers have got to come up with a way forward,” he said. “There’s going to be tailbacks if we are not careful. There will be carnage there. If the relief road is going to cut the traffic through Felpham by 30-40 per cent, then that traffic is going to be headed in another direction.

“That area (Shripney) has changed dramatically in the past three years with the number of businesses which have revitalised it and made it more popular.”
