Caroline Parry, Gemma Singleton, Anna Ward and Siobhaun Watts completed the course as a team and said they were helped by the fact the event raises funds for Help for Heroes.

Tough Mudders is not a race, it is a challenge, and a very hard one, too. The course is approximately 12 miles long, with up to 30 obstacles.

The obstacles have names like The Birth Canal, Kiss of Mud, and Arctic Enema, where participants slide into ice-filled water.

In other places, there are fences leaning towards the competitors, 10ft walls, tyres and water to climb under, electric shocks to avoid, human pyramids to make to reach the targets, and mud and water everywhere.

The team set they were wet from the very first obstacle and that 12 miles is a very long way, but they completed it within three hours.

Everyone pulled together, helping not only their own team, but any other team or individual in difficulty, as people set off in waves from 7am.

Caroline said the Fernhurst team was on a high as the mums finished and were awarded their orange headbands for doing so.

“We trained a bit,” she said. “It was a fantastic atmosphere and were planning to do it again.”

Tough Mudder has raised more than £1million for Help for Heroes The obstacle course is designed to test physical strength and mental grit. It is team challenge, not a timed race, to give people a feeling of exhilaration.
