TAKING part in Sport Relief didn’t just raise more than £1,000 for charity – it also helped Chris Davies back to fitness after a leg operation three years ago.

Chris, who lives in Fernhurst, went to the Herons for a swim primarily to exercise his leg.

“Gradually I found myself in the water two or three days of the week, at first struggling to manage 20 lengths a session, and only about eight at any one stretch.”

One day when leaving, he picked up a Sport Relief brochure, and decided to use it as a target to work harder and get fitter.

“I decided to really challenge myself and went for a 5k swim – 200 lengths.

“From that point on, I swam every day and as the weeks went by, managed 20 lengths in one go, then 60 and 100 lengths.

“I felt fitter, lost weight, gained stamina, and used it as a time to get away from the rush of life.”

When the day of reckoning dawned in front of a ‘limited’ crowd, and sporting his orange Swimathon swimming cap, he ploughed up and down the pool, covering the 200 lengths in two hours and 25 minutes.

Now a fitter, slimmer and more relaxed Chris said: “I am very grateful to my partner Hazel, who supported me throughout, putting up with early mornings and absences from the house, and particularly to all those who supported me through their sponsorship – raising £1,015.”
