Film club closesbut show goes on

Members voted unanimously to disband at the recent AGM.

Film Club membership is being transferred to the Community Association.

The film club was having to pay £99 for each film it showed.

Now Rye Community Centre is applying for a public licence which will allow it show free films and offer lesser known independent and foreign films to smaller audiences in conjunction with the main stream films carefully selected for a Rye audience.

Neale East, from the Club, explained: “The aim of the Film Club was to support the Community Centre so that it continued to offer Rye residents a local hub.

“Bearing in mind that there will soon be a new cinema in town, changes need to be made in order that the Community Centre can still be supported and the Film Club membership continue to receive a viable service.

Chairman John Holbrook explained that in essence this would mean that twice as many films could be seen at no extra cost.

“The committee is in the process of obtaining a Public Video Screen Licence, a blanket licence that will allow us to show free films that we supply ourselves.

“The licence would run from 1st May 2014 – 30th April 2015 at an annual cost of £107.

A full alcohol licence has also been applied for. This licence would extend the hours of business giving the Association scope to extend the hours of business for future events.

“The proposal was carried unanimously.”
