FIRE AT GOLF CLUBHOUSE

FIRE swept through the clubhouse at Willingdon Golf Club, near Eastbourne, in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday, March 23).

A full investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze which is believed to have started outside the three-storey building.

The fire caught hold in the ground floor kitchen and rose through the first floor and into the roof, which was completely destroyed.

Several hundred thousand pounds were spent on refurbishment of the clubhouse last year to bring it up to top standard.

At the height of the blaze six pumps from Eastbourne, Hailsham, Pevensey, Seaford and Lewes were present, with some 30 firefighters at the scene.

After getting the fire under control they began cutting away the roof space.

The stop came at 2.20am but investigators remained to carry out their examination of the building.
