PARISH COUNCIL: The council meets on Monday at 7pm.

MARTIAL ARTS: Kobudo Martial Arts meet on Thursday at 5pm.

YOUTH CLUB: The club meets Friday April 7 at 7pm.

BINGO: Bonfire Society Bingo on Saturday April 8 at 7.30pm.

MEN’S BREAKFAST: (Sponsored by members of local Parish Churches). The next meeting will be held at 8.15am on Saturday 8th April 8 at Piltdown Golf Club when Geoffrey Bignall will give a talk entitled Around the World in 48 Minutes. FLETCHING BONFIRE SOCIETY: Just to update you on what has been happening with the bonfire society since its celebrations last year. We have held a number of bingo evenings since November, which have been well attended, but it would be good to have some more people come and join us. Our next bingo is April 8 starting at 7.30pm. We have also held our AGM and it was decided that unless we get new members or people coming forward to help us with fund raising, preparations ie torch making, and on the night, and the day after our bonfire, then this year will be our last one. It would be a shame if this happens but last year the work was done by the usual few and we need more people to come forward and help. There were two families who came and helped us clear up the firework field last year and this was much appreciated. We are running the successful 100 club and the winners of the March draw were Clare Bullock, Judi Hollings and Andrew Shaw. The big draw will be taking place on June 10 and our new draw year starts on July 1. If you would like to join our 100 club for this, then please contact me on the number given below and I will pass your information on to the person organising the 100 club. We also have our annual plant sale on Saturday May 20 from 10am to noon. Please come and support us by buying your plants from us as all profits go to the bonfire society. 100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 30 March 1917. A Country Postman – Old Uckfiedians Death. One of the best known and respected parishioners in Uckfield passed away on Saturday in the person of Mr Alfred Sawyers of High-street. Deceased was undoubtedly one of the oldest, if not quite the oldest, inhabitants in point of residence, and was within a few days of his 83rd birthday. Two years ago last June he and his late wife were the recipients of many congratulations on the event of their golden wedding, but they were separated rather over twelve months afterwards. The old couple spent the evening of their days under the roof of their son-in-law and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Buckwell of High Street. Mr Sawyers at one time acted as rural postman between Uckfield and Danehill, his round being an arduous one, for in the morning the journey embraced over 17 miles, and the evening walk necessitated 16 miles. He had to carry a private letter bag for the Earl of Sheffield at Sheffield Park, as well as the mailbag for Danehill, Fletching and Piltdown. He was an active member of the Second Christian Advent Association, and was widely known and held in good repute as a religious worker both in and out of doors.
