Flooding chaos hits Bognor, Chichester and Midhurst

People have suffered massive disruption this morning following the heavy rain overnight and this morning andseveral road closures are in place across the area.

The A27 Chichester bypass was closed on the eastbound lane between the B2145 Whyke Road and A259 Bognor Road, while one lane was closed on the A27 eastbound in Chichester between Kingsham roundabout and Bognor Bridge roundabout because of flooding.

The B2145 Chichester Road in Selsey was closed both ways at the Park Lane junction.

There was flooding in Fishbourne, Bosham and Lagness and travelling time was this morning estimated at 30 minutes.

In the north of the district the A285 Duncton High Street was closed both ways between the Willett Close junction and the Beechwood Lane junction because of flooding.

College Lane in Chichester was partially blocked in both directions at the Spitalfield Lane junction while in Middleton-on-Sea, the carriageway was only just passable on Elmer Road near the Harefield Road junction.

There was also flooding in Eastergate Lane, Walberton, with the road blocked in both directions between the A29 Fontwell Avenue junction and The Street Junction.

A flood warning has been issued by the Environment Agency to the Bosham area in relation to the Bosham Stream.

Other areas of concern are Elbridge, Lidsey, Aldingbourne, Barnham, Yapton and Ryebank Rifes which have been put on flood watch alert.

Communter Rose Peach, who was travelling into Bognor Regis from Fishbourne said: “I’ve never seen so much water, in some places it has been worse than it was during the big floods in Chichester in the 1990s.

“I think it’s because it’s high tide as well and the water has nowhere to go.”

A number of properties around the area have been affected by the weather.

The fire service was in Sherborne Road, Chichester this morning pumping out three properties, while other homes in Clay Lane, Fishbourne and Willets Close, Duncton were affected.

Havant Road in Emsworth has been closed off from Emsworth roundabout to the Kings Arms pub and a number of homes are affected in Bridge Road, which joins Havant Road at the part which is closed.
