Enforcement Officers at Lewes District Council are warning promoters and advertisers to be aware of the action they will take to stop the illegal display of advertising material around the District.

Two companies have recently been prosecuted and received fines with costs being awarded to the District Council. Enforcement Officers saw unauthorised advertisements for Sussex Country Fair displayed in the Lewes area as well as unauthorised advertisements for a show called "Lady Boys of Bangkok".

The two companies responsible for the unauthorised adverts Rialto Events Ltd and Urban Circus Ltd were fined a total of 850.

David Brown, Enforcement Officer at Lewes District Council said "Unlawful advertising takes many different forms, is antisocial and illegal and we are taking action to prevent it. Apart from affecting the amenity of the countryside, such posters can distract drivers when placed along roads, junctions and railway crossings. There is a fine of up to a maximum of 2,500 for each advertisement displayed in breach of the regulations. We will continue to send warning letters to companies and promoters ordering them to remove illegally placed posters and other advertising material within 72 hours of the date of the letter or face prosecution".
