Former Felpham man's ride of his life, all for grandad

Cyclist Ashley Simmonds is getting ready to pedal 300 miles in memory of his grandfather.

Ashley (21) was inspired to raise money for his London to Paris bike ride by former Bognor Regis man Arthur Hitchcock.

Mr Hitchcock, who used to own the Aronel Cottage Care Home, suffered from Parkinson's disease for at least ten years before his death in May, 2006, aged 73.

Ashley, who lived in Felpham until late May, said: "When I was looking for cycle rides to take part in, I saw that I could raise money for whatever charity I wanted for the London to Paris ride.

"I chose the Parkinson's Disease Society because my grandfather suffered from it.

"From what I know he had to go through, it was not particularly nice. Research into the condition is also not as well-funded as other medical conditions. I expect I will be a bit emotional when I get to Paris because I am doing it for my grandfather.

"That is making me more determined. Instead of doing a bike ride for a bit of fun, there's a real meaning behind it."

He hopes to raise 1,500 by completing the 300-mile journey between September 3 and 7.

Copthorne resident Ashley will be riding his Carrera drop handlebar 18-gear road bike for the journey.

He is completing training rides of 50 to 70 miles on Sundays to prepare for his lengthy time on the saddle. He also cycles some 20 miles every day to and from his work as a business manager for a car dealership. His average speed has increased to 20mph along with his improved fitness.
