Free parking for blood donors scrapped

BLOOD donors can no longer park their cars in Lewes for free while they give blood, following a decision by the district council and NCP.

Until recently donors were allowed 30-45 minutes free parking while they carried out this vital voluntary service, but a couple who have been regular donors for more than 20 years have been told this has been scrapped.

William and Teresa Sholl, from Evelyn Avenue, Newhaven, have given blood more than 180 times between them.

Teresa said: 'It's easier for us to come to Lewes because of work commitments and we used to park in the car park near the Needlemakers.

'The National Blood Service used to send out cards which we displayed in the windscreen of the car which said we were giving blood and would be 30-45 minutes.

'We've now been told we can't have these cards.

'I think it's ridiculous considering how desperate the need is for blood donors.

'It also seems a stupid time to do this considering there is a national appeal for more donors.'

A spokesman for the National Blood Service confirmed the parking privileges had been taken away from donors in Lewes.

She said: 'The National Blood Service used to give out parking vouchers authorised by the Lewes District Council to blood donors attending sessions in the area.

'However, about two years ago, National Car Parks (NCP) took over management of the parking spaces and these vouchers were no longer recognised.

'The NBS regrets the inconvenience faced by regular donors and is very grateful for their continuing support.

'However, the decision to waive parking fees lies with Lewes District Council and NCP.'

The Express contacted the district council for an explanation but did not receive a response.
