Free trees from can campaign

NATIVE trees have been planted near schools throughout Wealden thanks to the success of a district-wide aluminium recycling project.

For every tonne of aluminium collected for recycling by the waste management team the not-for-profit industry Aluminium Packing Recycling Organisation (Alupro) donates a free tree.

Since September last year 23 schools and 15 parish councils have been given a total of 45 trees to plant.

Health and public safety councillor Pam Doodes said: 'The appeal is a great initiative.

'Without going further than their recycling bin or local recycling point people can help plant trees locally.

'The Alupro offer keeps going until September this year and has seen 109 tonnes of aluminium recycled meaning 109 trees planted so far.'

The metal is recycled time and time again with full cans being back on the shelves about six weeks after recycling.
