Fuel plant inquiry date change

THE public inquiry into the legal issues affecting Pebsham fuel pellet plant is now expected to be heard on December 16 rather than December 9 as first announced.

Operator Reprotech is appealing against the county council's refusal to grant a Certificate of Lawful Use allowing it to generate electricity from waste.

It is now clear that Reprotech's proposals would involve the installation of equipment that would allow it to heat the waste, once recyclables have been extracted, to produce gas which would then be used for generating power.

The Inquiry will deal with this proposed use and how it relates to the existing planning permission for the plant. It is likely to focus on matters of planning law in relation to what is permitted by the current permission, rather than the merits or otherwise of the proposals or the terms of the contract.

Rother and county councillor Jean Hopkinson said: "The only grounds upon which people can object is by saying there should be no further waste activities at Pebsham as they would conflict with the proposed Countryside Park, which has the full support of Hastings, Rother and the county councils and the regeneration Taskforce once the tip closes in 2006.
