Fundraising and summer fun at Egdean

Egdean villagers have been getting together to raise £1500 for the parish church of St Bartholomews and enjoying cream teas and a barbecue at the same time.

The annual cream teas, held in the gardens of Egdean House, were hosted by owners Jan and John Shepherd.

And there was a chance to view again part of the Monty Don inspired garden which featured in the garden show ‘Big Dreams, Small Spaces’.

“Fine weather brought in a steady stream of people from near and far to enjoy an afternoon in a rural setting,” said secretary to Egdean Parochial Church Council Christine Dallyn. “We had a lot of new visitors from the road signs advertising the event and from posters - we even had a family from Holland.”

And villagers raised more than £500 selling home made cakes ranging from fresh cream scones and choux buns to carrot cake, blueberry, lemon, chocolate, coffee and fruit slab, served with a selection of teas.

The cream tea event followed the annual church barbecue held in the churchyard.

The popular evening raised a healthy £975 with villagers, friends and family joined by priest-in-charge Father Mark Gilbert enjoying their get together for all ages with games for the children, a raffle and produce and book stalls.
