GCSE results: Family success at St Philip Howard

Richard Schaeffer, 16, came out with six A*s, three As and one B for his GCSEs.

“It’s all the ones I was hoping I would get A*s in, they’re the ones I’m studying for sixth form,” he said.

“I enjoyed music quite a lot because there’s a lot of creative leniency”.

He is going to study maths, further maths, music and chemistry and the school’s sixth form in September.

He was joined on the day by sister Nalani, 18, and older brothers Geraint, 21, and Arthur, 20, who have all been at the school.

Nalani described them as ‘the dream team’.

“We’re delighted,” said head teacher David Carter. “The students this year in particular have exceeded expectations and done themselves, the school and their parents proud.

“I think seeing their smiles on results day is a great reward to the teachers and all the parents and governors who have put in hard work in the year leading up to this point in time. It’s very much a team approach to achieving good results.”

He added: “Most pleasingly, students are making rapid progress at St Philip Howard from their starting points. Progress measures which placed us in the top five per cent in the country and second in West Sussex last year have been exceeded by these results which we are all very proud of.”

Jacob Southfield, 16, came away with two A’s, one A*s in art, four B’s and three C’s.

“I was laid back at first but when it came to driving here I was really nervous,” he said, “but I’m fine now because I know I did the best I could.”

Sixteen-year-old Daniella Mercade got ten A*s, who along with Nicholas Savill achieved a perfect set.

Riley Croucher, Kathryn McKrill, Gemma Poulter, Anna Thomas, Lucy Branchflower and Anna McCartain all got at least six A*s grades or more and the rest A grades.

There were 81 per cent of students gaining five or more GCSE’s at A*-C grades.
