Guides campaign to save hall

Brownie and rainbow groups are also joining forces to find 20,000 so the building at Bull River, between Chiddingly and Horam, can be replaced.

It is used by the groups for activities when it is raining during camping trips.

Pam Robinson, treasurer of the Weald division guide campsite, said: 'It provides a centre for all camping and other outdoor activities for guides, brownies and rainbows in the area.

'If for any reason we were to close the site, this would deprive the girls of this beautiful centre where units from all over the Weald division can meet up and have activities together.'

The current wooden building has only two years left until it is

considered unsafe for groups to use.

Plans for a new unit include an activity area, toilets, hot water, showers and a kitchen.

A number of fund-raising activities will be held by the guides and businesses in the area are being asked if they would contribute towards the fund.

The building has a colourful history and was originally used as a shelter for soldiers in the First World War.

It was then bought by the girl guide movement and has served them for more than 80 years.

Other groups across the UK use the campsite, including scouts and cubs.
