The BUPA run Pendean House Care Home at West Lavington has scored ‘good’ overall in a new Care Quality Commission inspection report.
It scored ‘good’ in safe, effective, caring and responsive categories but inspectors said records in relation to people’s care were not always accurate or complete and improvements were needed.
Pendean provides accommodation and nursing care for up to 40 older people. It offers long stay, palliative, respite and day services.
The CQC inspectors made their unannounced visit when there were 30 residents at the home.
Their report said staff took prompt action to respond to changes in people’s care needs but records for each person were not always accurate or complete.
“We did not identify a direct risk to people but the lack of accurate records meant staff were unable to demonstrate that effective care had been planned and delivered at all times. Records relating to staff training were not fit for purpose.”
But the report said: “Residents, relatives and professionals spoke highly of the service. Residents were encouraged to participate in activities and forge links with the community. There was an innovative activity programme and staff responded to people’s suggestions.
“They told us they were listened to and changes had been made to the menu and activities as a result of their feedback.”
Inspectors reported residents and staff had developed good relationships. “People told us that staff were ‘magnificent’. Residents told inspectors staff treated them with respect and they felt safe.
“Staff were able to pursue additional training and had received training in providing support at the end of people’s lives. Relatives spoke highly of the care provided and the support staff had provided to them during a difficult time.
“People enjoyed the food and staff were attentive to their needs and supported those who required assistance to eat or drink.”
Residents were involved in planning their care and support to be independent.
