The police community support officers who saved the lives of two elderly people trapped in their car after it plunged into Benbow Pond, near Easebourne, are to be recognised as heroes.

Heidi Hay and Rich Boston are to receive life saving awards from the Royal Humane Society.

Last October they waded into the pond, smashed the back window of the car, which was on its roof partly submerged in the water, and pulled the two passengers to safety as it slowly sank into the soft mud.

“We didn’t think about it, the adrenalin took hold and we did what we had to do,” said Heidi shortly after the rescue.
