HARD-WORKING and willing, the Land Army girls certainly played their part on the home front in the Second World War.

And Clifford-known as Ralph- Upton remembers them well.

Mr Upton, who lives at Slindon, wanted to join the RAF but ws told he had to remain in agriculture, so he worked on his parents' farm in Walberton during the war.

Joining them at Choller House Farm was a succession of Land Army girls, one at a time but probably a dozen in all.
