A WAVE of daffodils filled one wall of the Fernhurst Village Hall when the good weather and the date of the Fernhurst Horticultural Spring Show actually combined to produce some wonderful daffodils of every size and variety.
Although daffodils were many, tulips were very few, but Anne Pennington’s exhibits were well up to winning standard.
Another very full and very varied class was for hellebores.
There were 14 entries and more than 14 varieties were shown from very small lime green single blooms looking as though they were made from icing-sugar to blowsy crushed raspberry multi-petalled beauties. Camellias were varied with an increasing range of colours every year, from a single colour to the stripey varieties.
Vegetables included spinach, cabbage, lettuce and leeks and there were three rhubarb entries.
Craft is always popular and this year was won by John Buchanan beating his daughter, Rose, into third place, while his wife, Louise, won two of the photography classes, ‘shadows’ and ‘new life’ judged by Elaine Ireland.
During the summer, the society will be at the village Revels on May 17, opening gardens on June 14, taking an outing to the Weald and Downland Outdoor Museum for a talk by the head gardener Carlotta Holt on June 8 and growing everything for the autumn show on September 3.
