How do you get from one Sussex town to another? Via France - says sat nav

Traffic from Lewes to Newhaven can sometimes be a bit of a nightmare but you’d be hard fetched to find someone who spent nine hours making the journey.

However, that’s how long it would have taken Darren Nesbitt had he followed his Sat Nav, which told him he should travel from Lewes to Dover, get on a ferry across the English Channel and drive along the north of France before heading back to Newhaven on a second ferry.

Mr Nesbitt, who lives in Kent but was working in the area, said: “I entered the information into the Sat Nav and it said 8.57, which I thought was eight minutes and 57 seconds. I followed it for about four or five minutes before realising the time wasn’t changing. It was then that I looked at the map and realised it was taking me via France.”

Fortunately, Mr Nesbitt was able to use his phone to get more sensible directions and managed to make the eight-mile trip in around 15 minutes.

When asked if he would be using the Garmin device again, he said: “Well unfortunately, it’s fitted into my car!

“It is a bit of a bizarre one in that it will take you what I call ‘long cuts’ - where there is a straight route but instead it will take you around the houses.

“I sent a Tweet to Garmin about it but haven’t heard anything back yet.”
