SNAP SHOTS: I tend to dwell on the things I can't do, rather than the things I can do, and I'm sure that many of you are the same. I remember the times that I felt I'd failed at being a wife and mother, employee, friend, rather than thinking that I did an okay job. The other day my daughter asked me to look out a photo of her when she was a baby, and I began sifting through a lifetime's worth of photos [3 cases full], and lo and behold my kids looked happy and well-nourished, and while not being the best laundress in the world, they had tidy school photos, and big smiles We held some great parties at one time, teenagers dossing down on put-you-ups, engagement parties, 25th wedding, 21st parties. I couldn't do it now, but I did night duty, ran my home, and did some serious first aid and all kinds of things. Now my capabilities are only a fraction of what they were. I'm past my sell-by -date, and the things I can no longer do give me great feelings of inadequacy [I think it's called old age!]. Looking at those photos, I saw that I hadn't really failed, I'd just done the best I could with what I had, like most of us. Sometimes fate trips us up and throws a spanner in the works, and we are not to blame for that. So next time you get a touch of low self-esteem, get out the photo album, you'll be as shocked as I was to see that at the very least you were perfectly passable!

‘SHIP TO SHORE’: Iden Players are to present a variety show, entitled ‘Ship To Shore’, on Saturday 8th April, in Iden village hall. There will be two performances, one at 2.30pm, and one at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £7 for adults, and £4 for children. You can buy tickets from Iden Stores, from 6th March, or ring 01797 280143, to book tickets. There will be a raffle, the proceeds of which go to ‘Friends Of The Church’, and ‘St Michael’s hospice’. Raffle prizes would be very gratefully received.

A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion [family service], in Iden Parish Church, this Sunday, at 9.30am.

YOGA: Yoga in the Old Hall [by the church] is proving very popular. Everyone is welcome to the sessions, which are held, each Friday morning, from 9.30am-10.30am, at a cost of £6. If you wish to join, please email [[email protected] ]

IDEN AND DISTRICT NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY: There will be a lecture on ‘Seeing The Light; Moths’, by Keith Palmer, in Iden village hall , at 7.30pm, on Friday 10th March’ Visitors pay £3, for a very informative evening.

A LOVELY SERVICE: Last Sunday’s service at Iden Parish Church was taken by Bishop Richard, the Bishop of Lewis. Bishop Richard is a tall man, and looked resplendent in his clerical garb. He gave a sermon which was down to earth and yet so meaningful and informative that it was real ‘food for thought’. It was wonderful, as usual to have a joint service with Playden, and to see the Church Wardens from both churches accompany the Bishop up the aisle. The choir sang beautifully, and Susannah Miller, our organist must have been justly proud. Our vicar Teresa, and the church officials welcomed the Bishop with foresight and aplomb. Following the service, refreshments were served in the ‘Old Hall.’

HAVE SOME COFFEE AND TALK ABOUT THE CHURCH TOWER: Impending repairs to the Church tower, at Iden Parish Church, will be of interest to many, so there is to be a coffee morning, on Saturday 25th March, from 10 am until 12 noon. Photographs will be available, and we can ask questions about it’s repair. Everyone is welcome.

MOTHERING SUNDAY SERVICE: ON Sunday, 26th March, there will be a Family Service at Iden Parish Church, at 9.30 am, to celebrate our lovely mums. Everyone is welcome, grannies, aunts, mums, Dads, children and friends. It’s always a lovely service , with coffee afterwards in the ‘Old Hall’.

SUSPENDED IN TIME: Isn’t it nice to see the sun, albeit only a rehearsal for the sunshine we will hopefully get when sunny days [proper] arrive with the Spring. The recent bleak days are bare twig days, a sky that seems ready to weep days, the kind of days when, come early evening we light the fire and think twice about going out. The cold still taunts us, just because it can. These days leave us with a feeling of being suspended in time. We hear the silence that accompanies such days very clearly. Nature’s silences can be quite deafening. There is something expectant about these bleak periods that is teaching us how to wait. “ Be patient people” they seem to be saying, “ the sun is making ready and Rome wasn’t built in a day”!
