Illegal driving on South Downs has decreased

Illegal off-road motoring on the South Downs has decreased since the launch of Sussex Pathwatch Scheme in May 2006.

'Sussex Pathwatch' was formed to combat motorised vehicles using public rights of way illegally in the Sussex countryside.

While most people who drive off-road do so responsibly, a minority are putting legal users' safety at risk and causing damage to the countryside.

Sussex Pathwatch is a partnership between South Downs Joint Committee and Sussex Police and aims to educate people about how they can reduce anti-social behaviour in the countryside.

Project leader PC Mark Hillman from the Sussex Police said: 'Where registration numbers have been reported, vehicle owners have received a letter. A number have decided to sell their vehicles rather than continue off-roading.'
