Incinerator - plea to Minister to step in

PROSPECTIVE Lewes parliamentary candidate Jason Sugarman has joined hundreds of others in writing to Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, asking her to 'call in' the controversial Newhaven waste incinerator scheme.

That would mean holding a public inquiry.

East Sussex County Council's planning committee approved the plans on February 22.

But the Tory candidate told the Minister in his letter: The planned incinerator has been a very controversial issue in the local area with nearly 15,000 residents making objections to the county council.

'As a former district councillor in the area, I am aware of, and in sympathy with, the strong feelings about the plans among local people.

'Many residents remain very concerned by the proposal.

'Therefore I would like to request that you use your powers as Secretary of State for local government to call in the planning application for a public inquiry in order to examine whether the incinerator should be built.

'I believe that your intervention on this controversial local issue would provide local people with a much-needed clear and independent decision on the proposal.'
