Injured woman airlifted to hospital after A285 crash near Upwaltham

An elderly woman has been airlifted to hospital after a three car collision on the notorious A285 road between Duncton Hill and Upwaltham this afternoon (Thursday, August 11).

Police are still at the scene and the A285 which links Petworth and Chichester remains closed in both directions.

A spokesman for the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said three crews were called to the scene at 3pm.

Two people who were trapped in their cars, were rescued by firefighters using specialist cutting equipment.

One of them, the elderly woman, was taken to hospital by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance

Two more victims of the collision were released from their cars before the emergency service arrived.

The heavy rescue tender and a fire engine from Chichester were called to the scene along with firefighters from Petworth.

The 12 mile section of the A285 between Chichester and Petworth was named Britain’s ‘persistently highest risk road’ in a Road Safety Foundation survey at the end of 2014.
