It’s up, up and away for Midhurst’s plucky 94 year old

IT is probably not the first thing you would think of as a birthday present for a 94 year old.

But when friends at the Seniors Badminton Club in Midhurst suggested a champagne hot air balloon ride to one of their players, Joyce Lekstrom she jumped at the chance.

The friends came up with the idea while chatting at the Grange Centre after one of their regular Monday and Thursday sessions on the badminton courts with Joyce, who still plays a mean game every week with the group.

“We were talking about the one hundred year old who recently went abseiling,” said badminton club member Molly Etherington, “and then we came up with the idea of the balloon flight for Joyce and when we asked her was delighted.”

Joyce celebrated her 94th birthday on July 8, but had to wait for perfect flight conditions before taking off with the British School of Ballooning based in Ebernoe.

“It was great fun,” she said, “I enjoyed every minute of it.”

“There was a nice breeze and it was very pleasant and peaceful up there, just gliding along and looking down at everything,” she said, “I was amazed at how small everything looked from up there.”
