Judges impressed by stunning entries at Billingshurst’s flower show

Stunning vegetables, immaculate blooms and intricate crafts impressed judges and visitors alike at Billingshurst’s flower show on Saturday, August 20.

With the sun beating down on the produce stall and competitions outside, the burgeoning main hall offered a retreat with welcome refreshments in the corridor.

Sheila Leaney and David Stevens shared the honours with horticultural trophies: David winning the Maj Gen JML Renton Memorial Trophy for man with the most points, the Wally Wicks Memorial Trophy for vegetables and flowers, the Open Cup for most points in section C, and retaining the Bush Memorial Cup for vegetables.

The green-fingered pair shared the best horticultural exhibit, the John Kingston Memorial Trophy, David with leeks and Sheila with a vase of cut flowers. Sheila retained the Ladies Cup and the Alan Dugdale Memorial Trophy for Flowers, and won the F R H Simpson Memorial Cup for amateur dahlias.

The Miss Puttock Memorial Cup for Floral Art was shared by Brenda Twine and Irene Humphreys, while Sarah Stevens won the Howard Cup for Floral Expressionism.

Bridget Cordy and Daphne Davies shared the Coronation Cup for cookery, Julia Ralph won the Maj Gen JML Renton award for craft, and Angela Bates won the Society Photographic Cup and the Eve McHugh Award for best photographic entry of a starling.

The Junior Cup went to seven-year-old Aidan Osgood, Daphne Davies retained the WI Goodey Cup for cookery and the WI Beck Cup for most points in the show, while Sheila Partington won the WI Wilson Cup for craft.
