Kayaker rescued after capsizing in Littlehampton

The man was left trapped by the West Works, at the entrance of Littlehampton harbour, after his kayak capsized, shortly before 10.30am.

The lifeboat service and the local Coastguard team had been alerted. However, before they could get to the stricken kayaker, a passing boat picked him up.

He was escorted to the Littlehampton Harbour Board office, in Pier Road, before being taken to the nearby lifeboat station, in Fishermans Quay, where he was given first aid.

Nick White, operations manager for the RNLI which is based at the station, said: “He was caught in the harbour entrance on the West Works and was bouncing against it which isn’t pleasant as their are sharp barnacles on the wall. He was a little bit shaken up by it all.”

The man was taken to Worthing Hospital as a precaution.

Nick is urging other kayakers to ensure they are wearing the right safety gear, like a life jacket, and to let people know they are heading out and what time they should be back.
