Keeping eyes open for crime in Bognor Regis

Householders around Bognor Regis are being urged to recession-proof their homes against crime.

Joining Neighbourhood Watch can help them be protected against those seeking to make a dishonest living in the current hard times by burgling them or ripping them off on their doorsteps.

Neighbourhood Watch chairman Roger Nash said: "In these recessionary times, there are lots of things that can worry people. If they let them get to them, life can be pretty unpleasant. But help is at hand in the form of Neighbourhood Watch.

"Neighbourhood Watch covers some 14,000 households in the greater Bognor area. This takes in some 40 per cent of the population. Its membership is one of the highest in the country."

The watch members play an active role in crime prevention. They work closely with police officers and police community support officers.

"This is bolstered by Neighbourhood Watch street and area co-ordinators so the police have 'eyes and ears' in most parts of the Bognor community," said Mr Nash.

"Neighbourhood Watch plays an important and vital part in helping people feel safer in their homes and combating the fear of crime may people have."

But he said it was important to acknowledge levels of crime around Bognor had been steadily falling in recent years.
